The more you diet, the more you weigh π€―
As you would know by now, I am SO passionate about sustainable and balanced nutrition. Unfortunately, something I see so often with my clients is that these lovely ladies are getting stuck in the toxic diet cycle.
As such, today I'm giving you 5 evidence-based reasons why you should avoid restrictive diets!
1̲.̲ ̲T̲h̲e̲ ̲M̲o̲r̲e̲ ̲Y̲o̲u̲ ̲D̲i̲e̲t̲,̲ ̲T̲h̲e̲ ̲M̲o̲r̲e̲ ̲Y̲o̲u̲ ̲W̲e̲i̲g̲h̲
Research shows that 95% of people who go on a restrictive diet will regain the weight they lost within 2-3 years. 2/3 of these people will gain more weight than what they lost. These statistics are INSANE and go to show that with time, those who jump from diet to diet will have their weight yoyo and steadily increase.
2̲.̲ ̲S̲l̲o̲w̲e̲r̲ ̲M̲e̲t̲a̲b̲o̲l̲i̲s̲m̲,̲ ̲I̲n̲c̲r̲e̲a̲s̲e̲d̲ ̲C̲r̲a̲v̲i̲n̲g̲s̲
Did you know that when you restrict your food intake your body cannot differentiate between dieting and starving? Your body flicks into survival mode, something it is biologically wired to do from centuries ago when food wasn't always available. When your body senses that it is starving, it does everything it can to keep you alive and energised! This includes decreasing your metabolism, increasing your cravings for high calorie foods and increasing your hunger hormones. All of this combined is a dieting disaster!
3̲.̲ ̲I̲n̲c̲r̲e̲a̲s̲e̲d̲ ̲P̲r̲e̲o̲c̲c̲u̲p̲a̲t̲i̲o̲n̲ ̲W̲i̲t̲h̲ ̲F̲o̲o̲d̲
Imagine if I told you NOT to think of a red balloon. Do not think of that red balloon!! π It's impossible, right? Research concludes that the more we try not to think of something, the more we think of it. This is the same with food. The more we restrict our intake and don't allow ourselves to eat foods we enjoy, the more we think of them, crave them, want them, and eventually overeat them when we do get access. Which leads us to...
4̲.̲ ̲I̲n̲c̲r̲e̲a̲s̲e̲d̲ ̲B̲i̲n̲g̲e̲ ̲E̲a̲t̲i̲n̲g̲
Dieting is the fuel to the binge-restrict cycle. We follow a new diet, we cut out foods we enjoy, we become preoccupied with these foods, we get access to these foods and promise ourselves we'll just have a little bit, we fall into the all-or-nothing mindset and think "screw it, I'll go all out now and start again tomorrow", we overeat or binge eat, we feel uncomfortably full and shameful, we feel the need to diet again, repeat! It's a toxic cycle.
5̲.̲ ̲U̲n̲s̲u̲s̲t̲a̲i̲n̲a̲b̲l̲e̲
Lastly, you know I am a HUGE preacher of sustainability with nutrition. When you're tempted to start a new diet or make changes to your eating patterns, we encourage you to ask yourself, "would I be able to continue these new changes for life?" If the answer is no, it's clearly not sustainable or enjoyable.
